GST, VAT, and sales tax on guest bills
Tax rules differ by country and sometimes by city, but the maths on a simple guest bill follows the same pattern: start from eligible items, apply discounts, optionally add service charge, then apply or extract tax depending on whether prices are tax-exclusive or tax-inclusive.
This calculator does not replace professional tax advice. Use it to rehearse totals and train staff on how each line should read on a receipt.
The formula (tax-exclusive)
When menu prices exclude tax:
Taxable base = subtotal − discount Service charge = taxable base × service charge % Tax = (taxable base + service charge) × tax rate % Total = taxable base + service charge + tax
Tax-inclusive pricing
When the subtotal already includes tax, gross ÷ (1 + tax rate) gives the net taxable amount; the difference is tax included in the price.
Example (exclusive): Subtotal 50.00, 10% service, 8% tax → service 5.00, tax on 55.00 is 4.40, total 59.40.
Example (inclusive): All-in amount 59.40 with 8% included → net ≈ 55.00, tax included ≈ 4.40.
Common mistakes
Applying tax before vs after service charge when your local rules require a specific order.
Treating tips as taxable sales — tips paid directly to staff are handled differently in many jurisdictions.
Using the wrong rate for alcohol vs food where split rates apply (use a single editable rate here and split manually if needed).
